Training Course European Paediatric Neurology Society (EPNS). Developmental and Neonatal Neurology June 12-13 2007, University Medical Center Groningen,Groningen, the Netherlands.

During the last decades pre- and perinatal care have improved rapidly. Concurrently, our insight into developmental processes occurring in the young brain has increased. This resulted in a better understanding of the ways in which neonatal brain function can be assessed and what neurological findings at early age mean.

epns.jpg This two-day Training Course gives an update of the techniques that evaluate brain function at young age. During the morning sessions invited speakers will share their knowledge with the participants; the afternoon sessions consist of interactive workshops. The first day on Developmental Neurology will include an overview of ontogenetic events during early human brain development and a lecture on the natural history of cerebral palsy. The focus of this day is on two techniques to assess brain function in young infants: the assessment of the quality of spontaneous motility and assessment of cerebral function by means of amplitude integrated EEG. The second day will address Neonatal Neurology. It concentrates on neonatal encephalopathy and the floppy infant. The workshops include ultrasound, MRI and neurological assessment of the newborn and planning of metabolic studies in neonatal seizures.

The Training Course is part of the series of Training Courses of the European Paediatric Neurology Society (EPNS) organized by the Educational and Training (E&T) Committee of the EPNS (chair: Oebele F. Brouwer). The Training Courses are meant in particular for trainees in paediatric neurology and young paediatric neurologists. The current Training Course is linked to the 19th Annual Meeting of the European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD). This means that members of both societies are cordially invited to participate. Due to the interactive nature of the course the number of participants is limited.
