This exciting, new course has been developed by the British Paediatric Neurology Association as part of a series (levels 1-3) of courses. All aim to improve practice within childhood epilepsies across the UK and provide a programme of continuing medical education. Level 2 has been designed for general paediatricians and health professionals wishing to develop expertise / lead role in childhood epilepsies, within district hospitals and community paediatric services.

COURSE PROGRAMME

This course is the first 2 days of an ongoing programme designed to give a rolling schedule of continuing medical education within the childhood epilepsies. The faculty includes paediatric neurologists, general paediatricians and a medical educationalist.

Day 1: An overview of the history, investigation, management and differential diagnosis of paroxysmal events. It is considered an essential component of the programme. The sessions should be lively and enjoyable. For those who qualified prior to the days of communication skills training, there will be the chance to role-play taking a history with trained actors! For the less brave there will also be workshops around common clinical problems, a debate as well as didactic sessions.

Day 2: A closer review of paroxysmal episodes and epilepsies presenting in early childhood. Subsequent days are planned for 2007 onwards and will be structured around mid / late childhood epilepsies and difficulties in their management. The BPNA epilepsy training aims to provide on going medical education. It is hoped that the same courses will eventually be run in other deaneries, aiding the development of managed clinical networks. For 36 participants only, it will be run in small workshops (up to 6 people), a debate and larger didactic sessions. There will be emphasis on video footage of paroxysmal events.
