nchembio874_toc.jpgResearchers at Johns Hopkins have discovered that the same ingredient used in dandruff shampoos to fight the burning, itching and flaking on your head also can calm overexcited nerve cells inside your head, making it a potential treatment for seizures. Results of the study can be found online in Nature Chemical Biology.

itb.jpgA new study published in the current issue of the Journal of Child Neurology indicates that a treatment from Medtronic, Inc. , for spasticity in children with cerebral palsy improves their quality of life and is cost-effective compared to other established cost-effective treatments. The findings of this Medtronic-sponsored study should expand access to the treatment, known as Medtronic ITB Therapy(SM) (Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy).

infrascanner.jpgA hand-held scanner which can detect intracranial surface haematomas has been successfully tested in Mumbai, India.The infrascanner,roughly the size of a tin can, uses harmless "near-infra-red" light producing a light beam penetrates the skull up to three centimetres.When held to the patient's skull, sents readings within seconds wirelessly to a hand held computer or PDA.

mdcast.jpgResearchers into neuromuscular disease and those affected by these conditions have welcomed a significant MRC grant to create the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases, turning our growing understanding of the mechanisms of neuromuscular disorders into practical treatments and cures. The centre is a result of a partnership between a group of academic and medical institutions committed to translating research into patient care. These are UCL's Institute of Neurology and Institute of Child Health, the University of Newcastle, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust, and Great Ormond St Hospital for Children (GOSH).
